"If happiness were a fruit, it'd be a ripe banana; easy to peel, but sometimes you just need a little help getting to the good stuff!"
As I age, finding joy is most important and almost essential. Here are a few simple habits I do to help cultivate joy in my daily life.
Start the Day with Gratitude: Reflect on what brings you happiness each morning. For me, it's simple, seeing the sun another day, watching the birds on my back deck enjoy the feed I put out, and the deer that stop by during the night to partake in the abundance of corn served in the backyard.
Staying Active and Engaged:Incorporate gentle exercises and mentally stimulating activities into your routine. I am learning to do Chair Yoga, and I practice the piano multiple times a week - which by the way I self taught.
Connect with Others:Maintaining social connections (outside of Social Media) with friends and family. Facetime is a wonderful way to not only speak with family (especially my 4-year-old granddaughter) but to interact as well. My daughter-in-law is wonderful to keep me in the loop with activities my granddaughter participates - so when we are Facetiming, I will ask Sophia about this or that. Sometimes she is talkative, other times not so much.
Find Joy in the Simple Things:I am all about making memories, whether it is with family or friends or even co-workers its savoring small moments, or practicing mindfulness by being in the moment and not worrying about the past or what can't be controlled. Enjoying simple activities such as writing for this Blog.
Nurture Your Passions:Pursuing hobbies and interests that bring joy and fulfillment. Adult coloring is one of my passions and it is simple and peaceful, lettering, practicing calligraphy just to name a couple of my passions.
Practice Self-Compassion:Be kind to yourself and celebrate those achievements. I was beyond the moon when I first started learning the piano as it was something I had always wanted to do. When I hear a song on the radio and it's one that I have learned to play, you will see a huge smile on my face! That feel good feeling.
Give Back:Volunteer or help others to create a sense of purpose and happiness.
Embrace Change:Approach new experiences with an open mind and positive attitude. This is probably one of the most challenging for me - coming out of my comfort zone by doing something on the fly. But I am working on it!
Celebrate Milestones:Bingo! I am recognizing and celebrating 65 in April for me it is a very important moment. Our lives are broken into quadrants, as I like to refer and coming into 65 is meant to be meant with happiness and to really start living life.
Keep Learning:Stay curious and open to new knowledge and experiences. I have always said learning is lifelong. I intend to keep going!
Cultivating joy is an ongoing journey that requires intention and effort. By incorporating these habits, you can find deeper joy and fulfillment.
Remember, it's never too late to embrace happiness and make the most of each day.
